Spring 2011
Web Hosting/Domain Name

Project Type: Individual Project

You are to acquire a hosting account from 1and1.com. From the 1and1.com home page, click on the “Web Hosting” link. Here you will be presented with four Linux hosting packages. Be sure to select no less than the “1&1 Home” hosting package. Do not select the “1&1 Beginner” package, however you may decide to pay a few more dollars a month and opt for the “1&1 Business” or “1&1 Developer” plans.

I realize that many of you may already have a hosting company and domain name for your portfolio or personal website, however I want us all to be working with the same hosting company for the projects in the class. We may encounter many of the same issues and problems and can work together on issues that may be related to the hosting company.

Domain Name
Either while you’re setting up the hosting account or through your control panel after the account is working, purchase a domain name you can use for this project. The domain name might be useful later for a portfolio, but it isn’t required that you use it for that purpose. The domain name might represent your own personal identity or perhaps a professional identity you could envision such as below.

Domain Names Representing a Personal Name Domain Names Representing a Professional Identity
johhndoe.com
johndoe.net
johndoe.org
johndoe.name acmemultimedia.biz
acedesign.net
hnet.com

This project is ungraded, but is required by the due date. Failure to acquire the hosting account and domain name by the deadline will result in a third of a letter grade deduction in your final grade for the course.
